Becky Schmitz
was elected to the Iowa Senate in 2006. She represents Senate District
45, which includes Washington County, Jefferson County,
Van Buren County, northern & eastern Wapello County, southern Johnson
County.
Senator
Schmitz is vice-chair of the Human Resources Committee.
She also serves on the Education, Economic Growth, Ways & Means,
State Government, and Government Oversight committees.
In addition to her committee work,
Senator Schmitz serves on the Iowa Empowerment Board, the Center for
Congenital & Inherited Disorders Advisory Committee, and the Center for
Rural Health & Primary Care Advisory Committee.
Schmitz has been a resident of Fairfield
for 27 years. She is retired from a 33-year social work career,
including 27 years with the Southern Prairie Area
Education Agency, where worked with school
districts in Jefferson, Wapello and Van Buren counties. She also worked as
an adjunct professor for Indian Hills Community College for 12 years, has been an
active partner in her husband’s lawn care business, and recently launched her
own educational consulting and counseling firm.
Schmitz has been active in a number of
community organizations, including the
Iowa School
Social Workers Association, the Southern Prairie Education
Association, the Fairfield Chamber of Commerce, the
Fairfield Cultural Alliance,
and a local Girl Scout Troop.
Becky is married to Ron Schmitz, the
owner and operator of a professional photography business and a lawn care
business in Fairfield. They have two children: Curtis, who operates his own
sales business in Dubuque; and Cassie, who works as a Web developer for Iowa
Interactive in Des Moines. |
